International Religious Freedom is an essential topic, often overlooked, but it holds a significant place in shaping the well-being of our and global society. It’s not just a matter of defending a principle or standing up for the God-given right of individuals to choose their beliefs. It’s about creating a more stable, secure, and peaceful space for everyone.

Let me explain why.

The U.S. Moral Leadership and Soft Power

The United States has long been a global leader in promoting human rights and democracy. By championing religious freedom, we reinforce our moral authority and enhance our influence worldwide. This isn’t just about being the “good people” on the international stage; it’s about shaping global norms and building alliances based on shared values.

Countries that respect religious freedom tend to uphold other democratic principles like free speech and the rule of law. Supporting religious freedom helps foster more stable, democratic governments that are more reliable partners in international affairs. In short, standing for religious freedom boosts the U.S.’s credibility and strengthens its relationships with other nations.

Domestic Political Pressure

Here in the U.S., many religious groups and human rights organizations push for more decisive action on international religious freedom. Why? Because every faith community is a minority somewhere. Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, and followers of smaller faiths all face persecution in different parts of the world.

When the U.S. stands up for religious freedom, believers across various faiths feel more connected to their country. This strengthens our national security by fostering greater civic engagement and loyalty among diverse communities at home. When religious groups see the U.S. taking action, they are more likely to trust our system and contribute positively to society.

National Security Benefits

This brings us to national security. Promoting religious freedom can help reduce the spread of extremist ideologies. When people are allowed to practice their beliefs freely and without fear, the conditions that often lead to radicalization are minimized. By supporting religious freedom, we help create a more stable world and reduce the risk of terrorism, which can affect us all.

Global Stability and Peace

Countries that respect religious freedom tend to be more stable and peaceful. Stability abroad directly impacts us here at home. Instability leads to conflicts, refugee crises, and disruptions in global trade, all of which can negatively affect the U.S. Preventing these crises through the promotion of religious freedom helps build a more peaceful world, one that requires fewer costly international interventions.

Economic Interests

Nations that promote religious freedom often foster open, inclusive societies. These environments encourage economic growth, attract foreign investment, and create stable markets where businesses, including U.S. companies, can thrive. There’s plenty of research showing that religious freedom is good for business, and this is one of the reasons why it’s a key part of U.S. foreign policy.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties

Promoting religious freedom also strengthens diplomatic ties. A strategic approach to advancing religious freedom and national security fosters goodwill and partnerships, particularly with nations that have deep and strong religious traditions and aspire to provide their citizens with greater religious freedom, but struggle to implement it fully. By assisting these nations, we can strengthen our international relationships.

Cultural Exchange and Global Understanding

Finally, supporting international religious freedom gives us the opportunity to reflect on how it’s practiced both here in the U.S. and abroad. This exchange of ideas leads to better cooperation on global issues and offers us insights to improve our own practices. As LYNC’s recent “Train-the-Trainers” event demonstrates, our efforts to promote religious freedom in regions like Central Asia help not only those areas but also teach us valuable lessons to make our society stronger and more inclusive.

Supporting International Religious Freedom is about more than just upholding a principle. It’s about protecting our interests, ensuring our security, and building a more peaceful and prosperous world. When we invest in religious freedom, we are investing in a better future for everyone.
